STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 2, 2023 /CSRwire/ – United Rentals, Inc. has explained… (NYSE: URI), the world’s largest equipment leasing company, explores ways companies can create more efficient and sustainable worksites using hybrid energy solutions. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are driving the portable energy transition by storing energy from a power source such as a power grid or generator.

United Rentals has released a white paper titled “Hybrid Energy Solutions: The Future of Portable Power,” which explores strategies for pairing BESS with a power generator. When the BESS is paired with a power generator, the generator recharges the BESS batteries while the system is running. In low load situations, the BESS system turns off the generator and carries the load on its own until the power demand increases again and the BESS system instructs the generator to turn on.

“Hybrid energy solutions can help businesses by providing the energy they need for productivity and safety in a way that reduces operations costs and emissions,” said Dan Gribble, PHVAC area sales and marketing manager, United Rentals. “United Rentals can help businesses leverage a hybrid energy solution that meets their specific energy requirements, including hydrogen or propane generators used with BESS or alone, so their businesses remain flexible and responsive.”

In a recent project, a large construction customer reduced costs by 34 percent and cut generator runtime by two-thirds.

Benefits of hybrid energy

BESS provides high quality power and energy reliability to jobsites. The high density lithium battery system is charged with electrolyte from the power source. It can provide power to a remote location, charge electric vehicles, tools and other equipment, provide emergency support and more.

When BESS is combined with a generator, the generator operates only when the load is high or when stored energy is about to run out, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 80 percent. When the generator is turned off, BESS batteries provide emissions-free power. Using batteries to power equipment can reduce job site noise levels by up to 90 percent compared to traditional methods that rely solely on generators.

Hybrid power solutions can also reduce ongoing maintenance costs. Battery systems require less maintenance than generators, and generators need less maintenance when runtime decreases. Reduced generator wear results in longer service intervals, less oil and filter consumption by fossil fuel generators, and longer equipment life.
