Known as the “King of Concrete,” Boyce Mewes and his wife, Joan, chose a wooded site near Mount Shasta to erect their custom log cabin that was so remote that a road had to be built to transport building materials.

The road, which cost $250,000, was not wide enough to accommodate the machinery, so they built the house remotely and then brought the parts in by truck, according to published reports. The total cost to build the house in 2012 was estimated at $4.6 million.

Muse was homeless and living on the streets at age 14, then discovered construction at 19 and got a job digging ditches, according to CNBC, which described him as part of its “Blue Collar Millionaire” series. Six years later, in 1982, he and Joan founded Muse Concrete Contractors, based in Redding, California, and now one of the largest concrete contractors in California.

The custom log home from Pioneer Log Homes in British Columbia features open mountain and water views and 7,600 square feet of interior space, said listing agent Todd Renfro, of California Nevada Outdoor Properties. “You look directly at Mount Shasta from the balcony there, and you also have a view of Lake Siskiyou.”

“The details of the property and the quality of construction are something you don’t find,” he said. “Some of the largest records the company has ever used are on this property.”

The Meuse family lives full-time in Redding, Calif., and this is their weekend home, Renfro said. “They are downsizing and want to do more travel.”

The gated entrance leads to a half-mile-long paved driveway, he said. There is a three-car garage on the left as you pull up to the driveway.

“From the front door, the first thing you see is a huge carved tree with roots and a bear on it,” he said. “It’s amazing, just sitting there in the middle of the first floor.”
