New Canaan, this stone Georgia colonial had a starring role in the 2004 remake of “The Stepford Wives” starring Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close, Matthew Broderick and Bette Midler.
For the film, the formal living room was repurposed as the master bedroom for Kidman’s character, Joanna Eberhart, said co-listing agent Danielle Malloy, of Connecticut Luxury Real Estate. Some of the other six mansions on Summersweet Lane were also used in the film.
In the film, the women of the fictional town of Stepford, Connecticut spend all day knitting, gardening, exercising, and being perfect housewives while wearing pretty dresses, much to the dismay of the new resident. This wealthy enclave provided filmmakers with the perfect backdrop for black comedy.

“Summersweet Lane is one of the most desirable streets in New Canaan,” Malloy said. “It’s a private road, with stone pillars at the entrance.”
“It’s really a hidden gem,” she said. “You don’t find properties like this.”
One of her co-listing agents agreed. “This is truly the perfect New Canaan home,” said Jessica Lin, of Serhant. “It’s very rare, very difficult to find that kind of privacy in the New Canaan area.”
The six homes were built as a small subdivision by a developer in the early 2000s, Malloy said. It is adjacent to a 48-acre preserve.
The film was filmed just after the homes were built and none of them were inhabited at the time, Lin said.
From the front door you enter into a double height reception hall, with the living room on the left. This level also features a formal dining room, a sunroom that opens to a covered porch, a butler’s pantry, an open eat-in kitchen with a center island and Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, a built-in executive desk, a small bar and a fireplace.

“The surprising thing is the sheer size of the rooms,” Malloy said. The current owners purchased the 36-room house in 2007.
Architectural details include 9- to 12-foot ceilings, Brazilian cherry wood floors throughout, and extensive millwork, paneling, and columns.
The second floor has a study and five en-suite bedrooms, including the master. It features a seating area, two dressing rooms and a bathroom with an oversized walk-in closet and jetted bathtub overlooking the grounds.
“The master room is very private, and is separated from the other four bedrooms on this floor by a long hallway,” Malloy said.
There is another en-suite bedroom on the third floor along with a family/rec room and plenty of storage, including a cedar closet, she said.
The lower level, which spans an additional 4,000 square feet, includes a recreation room, gym, spa room, full bathroom and media room, according to the listing.

Neighborhood notes
The home is located five minutes from downtown New Canaan, which has good shopping and vibrant restaurants, Malloy said. This Fairfield County city is also known for its many parks.
She said there is a Metro-North train station in the city for commuters to New York, which is about 50 miles from home.
