Living Proof by Douglas Elliman; Al Taber
For two years, the Tabers have been trying to find someone to take over their luxury South Florida residence known as “Villa Museo” without any takers. Located in the coastal city of Boca Raton, 19y The century-inspired spread had a brief absence from the open market but is now back, this time with a reduced asking price of $7 million.
That’s $2 million less than the famed Broadway playwright and composer wanted for the venue. But it’s still far more than the $1.5 million he paid for the property in the spring of 2000, before spending three years and millions of dollars customizing the building. Currently filled with nearly $1 million worth of distinctive antique furnishings, purchased by an avid art collector, most of them from New York’s famed Sotheby’s and Christie’s auction houses — all of which can be included in the auction for an additional cost — the ornate residence is being offered by Bonnie Hitzig of Douglas Elliman .
Set amidst a duplex lot spanning over two-thirds of an acre, within the Coventry subdivision of the exclusive gated Woodfield Country Club community, this waterfront property features a five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home of just over 6,500 square feet. A one-story living space decorated with high ceilings, museum-quality lighting, arched windows, carved columns, and walls lined with limestone, mahogany, and cypress. There is also a gym, as well as a separate building that houses an Art Deco movie theater, gym seating, a ticket counter, and a concession stand.
Other highlights include a formal living room with a massive fireplace topped with stone grills, as well as a library, formal dining room, family room and kitchen outfitted with floors salvaged from a 400-year-old French church. The stately master sanctuary has “light oak floors that have been carved to mimic the wood inlays of the elaborate parquet floors that were the norm in European palaces in the late 1800s,” and a carved Louis XVI double bed that has been reconfigured into a king-sized bed. .
The outdoor amenities continue, as the grounds are filled with walking trails, fruit trees and tropical plants, and host a large free-form pool and spa, several spots ideal for relaxation and outdoor entertaining with a view of a tranquil lake, and an attached three-car garage; Topping it all off is a transferable golf membership at Woodfield Country Club, which includes access to an 18-hole championship golf course that was recently redesigned and renovated by architect Kipp Schulties at a cost of about $8 million.
Taber, a longtime venture capitalist as well as a film producer, is said to still maintain a penthouse in New York City, and a home and office on Cape Cod in his home state of Massachusetts.
