The cannabis company no longer plans to open the first Stratford dispensary

Verano Holdings, which operates more than 100 dispensaries across the country, won approval in April from zoning officials to convert an old bank at 1151 Stratford Ave. into a retailer of adult use and medical marijuana.

But the cannabis company was unaware that the beauty supply store that currently occupies that building had a multi-year lease that prevents the dispensary from moving into the space, according to Barry Knott, an attorney representing the store’s owners.

“My client, the tenant, is still there and hasn’t given up the lease,” Nott said Thursday of the owner of Hair Heaven Beauty Supply. “He has a successful business. It just doesn’t happen.”

Nutt said Verano tried to negotiate a compromise with the beauty supply store to take over the lease, which is in effect for another seven years. But he said the two sides were ultimately unable to reach an agreement.
