Step into this beautifully converted Art Deco country house in Portugal
Luxury British furniture company Clive Christian Interiors has transformed an Art Deco townhouse in Portugal into a charming Gatsby-inspired home. The gorgeous renovation features extensive wine storage, monogrammed marquetry, an impressive game room, and a cigar room paneled in walnut and complete with a mirrored ceiling.
A team of designers, craftsmen and installers saw the year-long project from concept to completion, working alongside local builders as they renovated the house from shell.
The result showcases Clive Christian’s exceptional craftsmanship and use of luxurious materials as well as many features that were designed specifically for the client, who also has homes in London and the USA.
Aware of the brand’s pioneering reputation, the client approached Clive Christian while the renovation was still in the planning stage, selecting units and materials from the ‘Architectural’, ‘Metro Deco’ and ‘Senate’ collections.
To satisfy the client’s love of luxurious finishes and unique design, the Clive Christian team installed bespoke cabinetry, panels and bespoke freestanding pieces throughout the house, including the entrance hall, en-suite bedrooms, dressing rooms, lounge, dining room, cigar room and games room. Details and materials have been modified to suit the style of the home, with bespoke marquetry adding the very personal finishing touch.
The stunning single-colour entrance hall makes an immediate impact while paying homage to the Art Deco period of the home. Black walnut cabinetry with contrasting brass fixtures and gold inlaid strips, plus white wall lights, complement the gorgeous black-and-white fireplace and marble floor.
A large central marble dining table adds a charming touch to the room, which is complemented by gray maple cabinets with marble inserts. The classic color scheme and use of geometric motifs are once again reminiscent of the period in which the house was built.
Clive Christian worked with luxury wine storage brand Spiral Cellars to install bespoke wine cabinets to house the client’s extensive collection. The gray maple cabinets, with marble shelves and brass rails, are carefully designed to blend perfectly with the other units in the room when the doors are closed.
On the opposite wall, hidden inside a cabinet, a TV rises from behind an ice machine and wine refrigerator, with lifting technology provided by Future Automations.
Locker rooms and bathrooms
The spacious ‘his and hers’ dressing rooms continue the monochromatic design of the entrance hall, where the white (hers) of frosted maple is contrasted with the use of black walnut (his). The clients’ initials are depicted in inlays on the wardrobe doors. Soft leather interiors keep precious garments in good condition while satisfying the customer’s love of luxurious materials.
The floor-to-ceiling black walnut center console includes a dressing table on one side and an entertainment unit on the back, and includes a TV enclosure and large free-standing speakers.
The client study features an elegant window seat surrounded by classic walnut cabinets and shelves, complete with integrated lighting to house books and memorabilia. The inlay subtly placed on the desk depicts the client’s initials.
In the attractive game room there is a large, low coffee table featuring a backgammon board and a chess board. Paneled in gray maple, the room has a closet that includes a TV unit and a walk-in closet that houses more refrigerated wine storage.
The cigar room includes a stunning mirrored ceiling and a floor-to-ceiling liquor station with fine spirits racks, Spiral Cellars wine refrigerators, and a central humidor. Classic walnut panels with brass fittings and gold-plated bands add to the intimate feel.
Christine Saladas, Special Client Director at Clive Christian Harrods, said: “It was a pleasure to work closely with our client in Portugal to complete our design vision. We were able to turn his ideas into reality using multiple designs and different finishes to transform each room, while also maintaining the integrity of the home.” The original. A highlight of this project was the work on the cigar room, complete with a stunning mirrored ceiling. Not only did Clive Christian Interiors design the custom fitted furniture and paneling, we had the pleasure of sourcing all the furniture, artwork and accessories to complete this wonderful room.
