Shooting at Willowest Apartments in Atlanta

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating a fatal shooting at an apartment complex near the Lindbergh MARTA station on Sunday.

It all unfolded at the Willowest apartment complex along Lindberg Place, according to the address provided by APD.

Cpt. Jeff Childers said the agency received a 911 call around 1:20 p.m. about the shooting. When officers arrived at the complex, they found neighbors trying to help a 22-year-old man who had been shot.

Police said the man lived in the apartment complex and went to a neighbor’s door for help after being injured. The man was taken to the hospital where he was presumed dead, according to Childers. Officials identified him as Jaden McKinnon.

“He lost a small dog at the scene,” Childers said, describing it as a French bulldog. At this time, he is not sure if the shooting occurred over the dog.

He added: “We are investigating the circumstances of the shooting.” “We’re looking into some leads.”

Neighbors who knew the victim say 11Alive McKinnon was simply walking his dog. Resident Jeremy Scott said he was upset.

“I’m going to have to start carrying my gun, you know, if we’re in the Wild West, somebody’s gotta tell me,” Scott said.

Some neighbors are now afraid to walk their dogs.

“This is broad daylight on a Sunday,” Scott said.

Scott said he has only been living in the complex for a few months and has never had a problem.

“I just moved here, so I wonder if I picked the wrong place,” Scott said.

Frenchies are a popular and expensive breed. Scott wonders if his dog will be next.

“I have a standard poodle, and they are a very desirable breed,” Scott said.

Scott mentions that his dog, Blanche Marie, is older, so he has to protect her.

“If someone tried to take my dog, I would get very aggressive, too,” Scott said.

Police said that shortly after they began the investigation, they found a car that could be linked to the case.

He added: “We found a vehicle that left the scene of the accident and we believe it was involved.”

The vehicle was stopped during a traffic stop, attempted to drive away from officers, and was eventually recovered, according to Childers.

Childers said it is still early in the investigation and officers are working to identify the shooter. There is no one in custody.

“If that’s what really happened, that’s concerning,” Scott said. “We have security here, but I think they’re not doing much.”
