Room + reinvents the townhouse

The project, which has been called the Secret Garden House, showcases a style Architects“Speak of the familiar country house, an architectural staple dating back to the late 18th century.” The team at ROOM + Design & Build notes that this type of building has become firmly established as the preferred residential style across the city. While rural homes fit comfortably into the irregular urban fabric of cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, residents often face a lack of security, privacy, daylight, natural ventilation, and green spaces.

Occupying a 95 square meter corner site at the junction of two roads in Ho Chi Minh City, Secret Garden House is an example of adaptability. The team’s vision addressed the needs of a family of four, who sought not only contemporary living spaces but also gardens and an elevator to facilitate movement. This goal was achieved through two interwoven approaches to design – optimizing spatial planning to match the requirements of the site and crafting an imaginative arrangement of lush garden spaces.

At the heart of Secret Garden House’s design is a carefully designed floor plan that embraces the unique shape of the site. Working within a round and irregularly shaped plot of land, the architects efficiently organize the spaces of the house. The ground floor’s gentle setback from the corner creates a welcoming entrance and leafy courtyard, its oval porch formed by curved granite steps and a concave main door.

The master bedroom on the first floor is formed by a convex curved window and pans, complementing the oval balcony on the second floor. This interplay of convex and concave curves, together with recessed glazing and deep plantings, lends a sculptural quality to the building, enhancing privacy and ensuring generous daylight and natural ventilation.

In contrast to the plain exterior, the interior of Room + Design & Build’s Secret Garden House exudes an air of transparency and openness. Crossing the threshold reveals the namesake ‘secret garden’ with a flowering acerola cherry tree and a variety of plants. This green oasis bathes the heart of the home in gentle daylight and a fresh breeze, while maintaining privacy through decorative hollow brick walls. The interior unfolds with a hydraulic glass elevator and two interior balconies surrounding the secret garden.

Wooden floors, beige painted walls and graceful built-in wardrobes create an elegant and dynamic interior atmosphere. Climbing to the upper level, passengers are greeted with a surprise – a roof garden decorated with countless trees, plants and flowers. Collectively, these vibrant gardens provide a peaceful haven for residents nestled in the heart of the bustling city.
