When it comes to expert interior design advice, we can always count on Nate Berkus. The famous interior designer, known for his clean, modern design style, regularly takes to Instagram to share interior inspiration and practical design tips for rooms throughout the home.
A recent post by the designer, seen below, led us to kitchen tile ideas, and more specifically the use of subway tile.
In the post’s caption, Berkus praises the use of subway tile in the kitchen, noting that it’s a “timeless material” as well as being a very practical choice by being “really easy to keep clean.”
Whether you choose to use tiles throughout the kitchen, or just as backsplash ideas, they are a classic option that provides a simple, clean look to the home, while fitting a wide range of design styles, from farmhouse decor ideas to minimalist decor.
As shown by Berkus, we’re also seeing more creative ways to incorporate classic tiles into the kitchen, such as using them as kitchen ceiling ideas, which you can see in the third slide of Berkus’ post.
We spoke to design experts to get their take on using subway tile in the kitchen. Interior designer Jessica Bagwell explains, “Subway tiles are a popular and timeless choice in kitchens due to their versatility, affordability and durability. They can be installed in different patterns and work in both traditional and contemporary designs.
Hudson Rose Interiors is an Atlanta-based interior design firm that creates functional and visually innovative design solutions for homeowners that reflect the personalities of clients.
If you choose to choose subway tiles in your kitchen, it is also important that you consider the installation. There are a range of ways you can experiment with tile design, as interior designer Debbie DeMarais explains: ‘Choosing a vertically stacked placement in your installation introduces a subtle contemporary touch. Not only does this approach add visual depth, but it also heightens the appeal of an under-cabinet placement. Because it’s especially effective at making small spaces appear taller.’
You can also experiment with different subway tile colors, and make a change from the classic white, such as the rich shade of green shown in the image above. Choosing different texture variations also makes use of the major tile trends for 2023.
DeMarais also suggests choosing a contrasting grout color for added visual interest: “Don’t underestimate the impact of grout color when working with subway tiles.” Choosing a contrasting color can create a stunning geometric pattern, while choosing a tone that matches the tiles creates a more harmonious, seamless look.”
