On the lush shoreline of Clairville Beach, this new residential residence is set back behind a green canopy that cascades from the roof down and grows from below, blurring the lines between outside and inside. M House Hints of Brazilian modernism appear in the tactile form with deep cornices, voids and openness.
The basic principle of M House was to create a comfortable and private family home that retreats into the landscape using immersive planting from the cascading roof down, visible from every room, as well as planting from the ground up. Encouraging nature to envelop the structure, and blurring the lines between outside and inside allows the house to disappear behind greenery, providing privacy and tranquility.
The feeling of being outside while remaining protected by a compositional structure was key – and this is where we played with the idea of hard and soft. The hard in Brazilian modernist design is represented by concrete, stone and tallow wood. The result is a sturdy structure with large eaves that create a secure shelter into which to retreat.
Soft is embodied in light, spaces, landscapes and glass. The soft fabric allows the sturdy shelter to become one with the trees, plants and water surrounding the house.
