It’s no surprise that Kim Kardashian is a fan of grey. The down-to-earth sensation and business mogul constantly gravitates toward neutral colors and simplicity, not only in her fashion choices but also within her home.
In the Instagram post below, Kim Kardashian gives an inside look at the chic work and living area, which was designed by Tommy Clements and Waldo Fernandez in collaboration with Michel Lamy of Rick Owens.
Despite its expansive size, Kardashian’s cavernous living area is approximately 40,000 square feet, and the room doesn’t feel cold or clinical. The designer echoed the same muted color scheme that Kim used in the packaging for Skkn – her own brand of successful beauty products.
The power of this neutral color palette will add warmth and elegance to a room – and it should not be underestimated. A soft scheme of tonal neutrals creates a reflective backdrop to the ever-changing light of the seasons. But how can you incorporate this “warm minimalist” aesthetic into your home?
You don’t have to go for a completely neutral or beige room either. In fact, the beauty of a neutral scheme is that it provides a great scaffold for hanging pops of color, adds Deborah Bass, founder of Base Interior.
“This is especially true in the home office where a neutral wall, patterned plaster or wallpaper create a backdrop for books and artwork, both of which can take decorative center stage.” She recommends using more subtle shades with deeper, richer natural woods to create balance. “Neutrals offer a stylish and timeless response to the working-from-home dilemma, and are also versatile in the sense that different family members may use the space at different times of the day and for a variety of functions,” she adds.

Interior designer Tamsin Johnson shares this love of decorating with neutrals. “I love the calmness you create when you have a neutral color palette in a room. But this choice certainly doesn’t mean it’s boring: you can create an interesting space by layering different tones, such as off-white and beige, and then introducing a combination of caramel and even accents. Of black if you wish.’
“If I have a muted color scheme, similar to Kim Kardashian’s, I focus on texture to bring in different layers of interest,” she says. ‘You have to think about how to present differences and things that feel different to the touch without focusing solely on colour, and this often creates a more interesting scheme. Varying glossy surfaces and matte surfaces add an extra layer of texture and texture.’
“Natural textures, whether stone, wood or linen, can help anchor a neutral color scheme. This means the overall look doesn’t look too uptight or overly tailored. They offer a relaxed quality that always works well.”
“Sofas and armchairs covered in white fabrics of different textures, for example, linen or canvas, continue the lightness of texture provided by the floors, walls and ceiling.”
“However, you shouldn’t be afraid to add one bold piece, even in a neutral room. I think a strong black metal design or an ebony wood design can work brilliantly as a centerpiece in a simple room. It makes all the other elements come together around it.”
