How Simone Biles Ensures Her Modern, Minimalist Living Room “Transcends Trends and Styles”
Few color pairs have the same timeless status as black and white – and for good reason. This monochromatic pairing has eclipsed passing trends for centuries, making it a safe yet elegant choice in many celebrity homes—and Simone Biles is no exception.
The Olympic gymnast, who resides in a contemporary estate in Houston, Texas, experimented with a monochromatic color scheme in her open-plan living room — which features bright white walls and a large black sofa. Other than that, the furniture in the room is noticeably sparse, but the result is not boring at all.
Instead, with its classic color scheme and carefully coordinated furniture, this living room is a modern minimalist lover’s dream. Designers say it is a reminder of the unwavering power of black and white.
“Black and white color schemes have a classic appeal that transcends trends and styles. They capture the essence of contrast, a fundamental principle in art and design, that makes them forever relevant,” says design expert Andrea Hundley.
“I’ve worked on many homes over the years where the black and white scheme has evolved seamlessly with changing decorating trends while remaining sophisticated and inviting.”
When designing a black and white living room (or any monochrome space), Andrea explains that we should start with a white background, just as Simon explains.
“The white background makes the space feel open and airy,” she says. “In a recent project, I used white paint on the walls and ceiling, which acted as a blank canvas, allowing the black furniture and décor elements to take center stage.”
After finding the perfect white base, Andrea says we should introduce black in different hues. The black Simone sofa is a natural starting point, but we can also look to smaller furniture and accessories – including a ‘black accent mirror’ or a ‘sleek black console table’.
And while blocky colors are influential in Simone’s home, Andrea says black and white patterned pieces have a similar effect in creating a more playful and sophisticated space.
A black and white patterned rug or wallpaper can add interest and texture to an area. One client’s home had a beautiful black and white geometric tile floor that added an unexpected touch of whimsy to the chic design.
To add a touch of color and interest without sacrificing a minimalist aesthetic, the designer added that the featured houseplant will instantly breathe life into the space. And just like the color scheme, it won’t go out of style anytime in the future.
“Greenery can add a pop of color without detracting from a monochromatic look,” she says. For one of my clients, a long fiddle leaf in a black bowl against a white wall became a striking focal point in the room.
