Home improvement star Bob Vila is listing his Florida waterfront mansion for sale with an asking price of $59.2 million.

America’s favorite handyman and home improvement star Bob Vila, 77, has listed his Florida waterfront mansion for $59.2 million, as he and his wife plan to downsize.

Located on Everglades Island, just off West Palm Beach, the 0.84-acre estate is 6,300 square feet and has seven bedrooms.

The home also includes approximately 175 feet of water amenities including a pool, hot tub, and private dock.

Villa and his wife, Diana Barrett, a former Harvard professor, bought the house from her late mother for $6.1 million after Barrett’s parents bought it in 1975 for $375,000.

Chris Vella, the listing agent and the couple’s son, told the Wall Street Journal that the house was originally built around 1949 and has a formal H-shaped plan.

Vila and Barrett started doing small renovations in 2005 when they hired a general contractor and landscaper to keep the house “feeling very old, Florida.”

They started by putting in a new electrical system, a new roof and windows. With each renovation, the couple tried to avoid changing the original design of the property.

On the east side of the house is the loggia, a covered outdoor walkway set on black and white marble floors that extends to the pool terrace.

The couple then went on to add a guest suite where they connected the separate cabana to the main residence.

The kitchen has also been remodeled with a huge center island and large stove with extractor hood. It also flows seamlessly into the large family room and dining room.

The living room is equipped with large glass pocket doors overlooking the pool, private property and Lake Worth.

One of the bedrooms is decorated with red details, white walls and plenty of natural sunlight shining through the white venetian blinds.

Barrett said that although the house looks like a “modest brick house” from the outside, she likes that visitors can enjoy the pristine water views once they enter.

Beyond the home improvements, the exterior showcases Villa’s talent for gardening as he said the grounds on the property are mixed with tropical plants, an orchid garden and native plants.

Villa also revealed that the land is full of royal palm trees dating back to the 1950s, along with ylang-ylang trees.

Vila built his brand on helping others upgrade their homes on shows like This Old House and Bob Vila’s Home Again, and he also visited the sets of Tim Allen’s 1990s sitcom Home Improvement.

Allen and Vila continued to face off in trivia contests and other races and Allen appeared in the film Bob Vila’s Home Again.

Although Vela is no stranger to home improvements, he said the small improvements at his Florida mansion helped shape the house but also became difficult to handle alone.

“It’s an old house, so there’s always something there,” Villa told the Wall Street Journal.

He and his wife have set their sights on downsizing to a small house in Palm Beach, where two of their children live nearby and the third resides in California.

The couple had a “15-minute flirtation” with the idea of moving into a new apartment building in West Palm Beach but quickly called it off once they realized the glass walls wouldn’t be able to hold their artwork, Barrett said.

Another reason the couple decided to put their beloved Florida home up for sale was the booming housing market.

Redfin reported that the median sale price of a Palm Beach home in September 2023 was $1.65 million and that homes in the area sold 172 days after being listed.
