The design of a restaurant near Gdańsk has won a prize in a prestigious architecture competition for being what judges described as an “environmental work of art”.

‘The Solarlux Cabin House’ restaurant designed by Polish architect Piotr Kuczia was awarded the ‘Private Houses’ category at the 2023 International Architecture Awards.

The unique design is based on stilts that give the impression of floating in the air, and consists of a gable roof, a simple but elegant interior and a glass conservatory overlooking the sea that allows sunlight to enter the interior.Press materials

During cold winter periods, the conservatory acts as a large collector of air which is used by solar radiation for heating.

It impressed the judges not only with its simple form and location, but also with its environmental solutions, with an International Architecture Awards spokesperson saying: “The design of the beach restaurant in Poland is an environmental work of art.”Press materials

“Valuable architecture means eliminating the unnecessary and reducing it to the essence in response to current conditions,” said an elated Kuczia.

“I usually arrive at my concepts intuitively at first, without long processes of rational thinking, although of course they are based on many years of experience and knowledge acquired over the years.

“It was also the case that after receiving this assignment, a vision of a simple, typical shape with a steep roof quickly appeared in my mind.”

He added that the high ceiling is a response to the building’s winter garden, saying: “The hot air will rise there and exit through the open skylights, ensuring a tolerable microclimate inside.”
