Federal grant paves the way for expansion of Tiny Homes of Maine

HOULTON, Maine — The final portion of financing to expand the Tiny Homes of Maine manufacturing facility in the Houlton Industrial Park was awarded to Shiretown Development Corp. of Houlton on Wednesday.

One of 16 government organizations receiving funding from the Northern Border Regional Commission, the city-run Shiretown Development Corp. received $500,000 for the 12,000-square-foot project valued at $1.867 million.

“Hopefully this will close the gap in funding and we can move forward,” Nancy Keach, Houlton's director of development, said Wednesday.

Aroostook County is not immune to the national housing crisis and rising home prices. Many county cities have long waiting lists for rental units, and the small inventory of homes for sale often sells out within days of a property being on the market, according to local Realtors.
