CT Castle is for sale for less than half of what it was last year

Those who dream of living like royalty can get a castle in the state of Nutmeg today for less than it did last year. Its owner built the castle so that his daughters could realize the same dream.

Chris Mark Castle, located at 580 Brickyard Road in Woodstock, is listed for $26 million, according to Zillow, and that’s the lowest price ever for a castle. The castle was in and out of the market. It was previously listed for $60 million in February 2022. The previously higher price included 400 acres, while the new lower price includes only 75 acres, according to Compass listing agent John Pizzi. Additional acres are still available for purchase, Pizzi said. However, it would increase the price.

While the castle in Brickyard Road may look like something built hundreds of years ago in Europe, it was actually completed in the 21st century. Pizzi told Hearst Connecticut Media that its owner, Christopher Mark, began building the castle in 2003 and completed construction in 2010. Some of the furniture in the house was imported from Europe, Christopher Mark, the eldest daughter of Christopher Mark, told Insider in 2022. over the course of 30 years.

Just because the owner isn’t officially royalty, doesn’t mean they don’t dress like one. On The Castle’s TikTok account, Christopher Mark and his daughters are dressed as royalty. Christina Mark told Insider in 2022 that her father built the castle in order to fulfill his daughters’ dreams of “becoming princesses.” Christina Mark also said that the family had ancestors in Ireland so they wanted to keep the tradition going. Christina Mark said the family moved into the castle when she was about 7 or 8 years old. However, the owner decided to sell the castle because his daughters were attending college, Christina Mark told Insider.

“My sister and I, when we were younger, used to dress up like princesses, and he just wanted our dream to come true,” Christina Mark told Insider.

The Gothic castle, with 18,777 square feet of living space, is surrounded by a moat and overlooks the 30-acre Potter Pond. Its interior features 20 rooms, including nine bedrooms, seven full and three half bathrooms, and a dungeon-like underground area. It has towers that reach 126 feet into the sky, its listing says. Stained glass is used throughout the castle, the listing indicates.

Not all visitors to the castle were human. In 2020, Christopher Mark took the camels for a walk outside the castle, according to a post on the castle’s Facebook account.

Fire departments have been called to the property several times this year. In February, a 150-year-old house on the property was destroyed by fire, and in March, another fire broke out, but it wasn’t in the castle either. Pizzi said the fires did not affect any pricing decisions.

“These were outbuildings, about 400 acres, and there was clearly more than just a castle on the property,” Pizzi said.
