Text description provided by architects. The project area is located in Soluca village in Lapseki, at the northern tip of Çanakkale Province in Turkey. Ergin House is a residence for a small family, located 500 meters from the Dardanelles Strait, which connects the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Designing family homes is one of the most challenging subjects of architecture. During the design phase, a close relationship must form between the designer and the user. Although the house is a small building, the designer must increase the level of understanding with the user, and put in intense effort and attention.

The Ergin House was designed and built with similar challenges. The two-year process began with getting to know family members. Their life, customs and land data shaped the design idea. In the design period, we produced different strategies that could connect user requirements with the long, narrow plot of land overlooking the Dardanelles Strait and Çanakkale Bridge. The long outer street, inner street, many rooms facing the inner street, open spaces and gardens formed our main design style. While this fragmented scenario presented many spatial possibilities, it also caused many difficulties during the construction phase.

Places that move in and out, forward and backward, such as the Aegean coast, create many small squares, places and stone spaces. These were different possibilities containing diversity in life. In this context, we designed the entire building as rooms and spaces connected to a long, thin internal street in which these spaces range at different heights. We separated the heavier ground floor made of stone and concrete, and the upper floor made of lightweight timber frame. The contrast between these two levels led to the feeling of different structures and variations in lights, textures and even smells.

We have used the idea of “being present during construction on site and improving design during construction” in almost all of our projects. During the construction period, we tried to use some practical details that would allow us to control this relatively remote construction site. In this context, we tried to shape the construction process at different levels of detail according to the capabilities of the manufacturer and craftsmen. Space is an environment, a habitat where life can grow green and grow stronger. Space power is also an infrastructure that can also determine the quality of life.
