A waterfront home on Siesta Key in Sarasota is on the market for $21 million

The home designed by the award-winning architect has the second most expensive price in the area.

A Siesta Key estate designed by an award-winning Sarasota architect has been listed for $21 million with the Sanderling Club.

Jay Peterson designed the residence at 8250 Sanderling Road, which was built in 2000. The Sarasota architect has received more than 80 design awards, including a gold medal from the Florida AIA, according to previous Herald-Tribune reporting.

Bill and Elaine Cross purchased the 1.5-acre property for $8.85 million in 2014, before completing a “transformational renovation,” in collaboration with Peterson and Michael K. Walker and Richard Gehry, according to the news release about the 7,750-square-foot residence. On the water in Siesta Key.

“Comprised of four elegantly rectangular wings, the exterior is a true work of art, supported by an unfinished concrete frame,” marketing materials say. “Layers of concrete, intricate partitions and exquisite glass details adorn the modern facade. A seashell-patterned concrete path sets the stage for the extraordinary experience that unfolds inside.”

Joel Schemmel of the Schemmel Soda Group in Premier Sotheby’s International Realty’s Sarasota office listed the property on Wednesday.

“Architectural brilliance meets contemporary coastal luxury in this exceptional estate,” Schemmel said in the press release. “Located within the prestigious Sanderling Club on Siesta Key, this home offers exclusive access to an array of upscale amenities to accompany an unparalleled beachfront lifestyle.”

The property has won awards from the Gulf Coast Chapter of the AIA and the Florida Chapter of the AIA, and even received a mention in two books on Florida architecture, according to the press release.

The property’s eye-catching $21 million price tag is among the most expensive in the area, just shy of the $22 million listing at 3799 Flamingo Ave. On the north end of Siesta Key.

But both are well behind the $33.8 million listing that hit the market in September for a newly constructed home in the Harbor Acres neighborhood.

While the Sarasota real estate market has seen a moderation in prices, closed sales have been far behind last year, although a luxury property sold in 2023 on Lido Key for nearly $14 million.

Although there are many properties listed for more than $20 million, the record sale for a Sarasota property remains a Harbor Acres sale as of the summer of 2022 at $17.5 million.
