A stunning $3.2 million architectural project in Sherman Oaks, California, celebrates modern organic style

A home nestled high in the hills above Los Angeles that celebrates organic, modern architecture was recently put on the market for $3.2 million.

Built on a half-acre lot in a private valley in Sherman Oaks, the one-of-a-kind home features clean lines, raw materials, and a color palette inspired by nature.

The 3,240-square-foot residence was designed in 1940 and updated over the years by architect Ted Tokyo Tanaka. The famous architect was clearly influenced by the magnificent natural surroundings of the property.

Mature oak trees stand tall next to the log home, and windows in nearly every room welcome natural light and views of the city lights. Tanaka, a master of combining Eastern and Western design styles, drew on his appreciation for modern minimalism and his knowledge of the architectural traditions of his native Japan for this project.

“This property was initially a small building built in 1940,” says the listing agent. Jonathan ButlerDouglas Elliman – Beverly Hills. “It was expanded somewhat in 1965. Then in 1982, the owners commissioned Tanaka to recreate the space, which included expanding the space and vertical volume of the existing structure and adding a second floor.”

Tanaka returned to the property in 2002 to renovate the kitchen and several other interior rooms. One noteworthy change was the expansion of the primary bedroom to include a solarium.

The first floor is where you will find the main living areas, including the kitchen, dining room, several bedrooms and a living room with high ceilings.

The master suite occupies the entire second floor and is equipped with a solarium, open loft office, double sinks in the bathroom, and a private deck.

Sliding doors in the first floor living room lead to a spacious deck, outdoor kitchen and pool with spa. But that’s not the only outdoor living space. The property is filled with additional decks and decks for al fresco meals under the canopy of native oak trees.

Located in the hillside suburb of Sherman Oaks in Los Angeles, this property remains close to the city’s hotspots, museums, and world-class hospitals.
