Bedford, New York, located about an hour north of Manhattan, has a gorgeous outdoor pool area and a library with a secret door.

The property is part of the Penwood community, where singer Mariah Carey rented a house with a 90-foot violin-shaped pool during the pandemic. The gated enclave contains large homes on manicured common grounds in a Westchester County town known for its horse farms and sprawling country estates.

The community was developed with easy access to Mount Kisco, a busier city with “a lot of amenities,” said co-selling agent Stacey Oestreich. “Its collection of 12 or so modern palaces is set in an elegant, elevated landscape surrounded by forests.”

This private home on Penwood Road features a 50-foot infinity-edge saltwater pool with an oversized hot tub. There’s also a pool house that has a convenience store-style “fun” window to cater to people’s needs for poolside snacks and a shaded area when the mercury rises. Elsewhere on the grounds, golfers can hone their skills on the green using a bunker.

The property, designed by architect Tassos Kokouris, who focuses primarily on custom residential and equestrian properties, was custom-built in 1999 to emulate an English mansion, with stone facades and garden-like walled grounds. Its design includes large windows and a mixture of gabled and hipped roofs. It was completely renovated by its owners last year, with a custom-designed kitchen, butler’s pantry, and new bathrooms that give it a “new feel,” according to the agent.

Inside, a double height window into the hallway with views over the pool area makes for a dramatic entrance. Her contemporary pale kitchen has a curved window around the breakfast room. Other highlights include a wood-paneled library with open fireplace and concealed door to a second sitting room. Another interesting feature is the three-season covered sun porch.

“The entertaining flow of the home, inside and out, is special,” Oestreich said. “It has exceptional attention to detail; for example, the master suite has an adjoining circular living room and is separate from the children’s suite, creating a private space and containing a true guest suite with its own elevator access and wet bar.

The 10,822-square-foot property has five bedrooms, eight full bathrooms and three half bathrooms. It has over 5 acres of fenced landscaped grounds.
