In some of the most popular TV series, the setting in which the story unfolds is so unique that it feels like an extra character. Despite how often we see them, the design of these places can sometimes be difficult to understand. Fortunately, interior designer-turned-illustrator Iñaki Aliste Lizaralde has dedicated his time and skill to recreating the floor plans of some of TV’s most iconic locations, like Gilmore GirlsFamily home and Dunder Mifflin building from the desk. Now his works have been collected in a book titled Behind the Screens: Floor plans and footage from the best TV shows of all timepublished by Chronicle Books.
Alice Lizaralde began illustrating floor plans for television sets nearly 15 years ago. And the first person to create him was FreezerFake apartment in Seattle. “Many years ago I created the floor plan Freezer “As a personal therapy,” the artist tells My Modern Met. “I really loved the show and her chic apartment, so I wanted to see her designed.” He decided to share it on social media for other fans to enjoy, but that was as far as he expected.
“Two years later, a friend told me I should do it friends “Floor plan, so I did that,” Alist Lizaralde recalls. “She was also a huge fan of Sex and the City So then she asked me to draw Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment. Then I made another, and then another… until now.” To date, he has designed 150 floor plans, of which about 80 are from TV shows and the rest from movies, including some updated versions or renovations.
The artist explains that movie plots are usually easier to draw, because they have more cohesive and consistent sets than sitcoms and shows with multiple seasons. “In long-running series, it is common for sets to change and adapt according to the plot,” he explains. lists The Simpsons The house for example, where rooms and features can switch places from one episode to the next. Despite his extensive portfolio, he abandoned some TV floor plans because it was impossible to create a cohesive layout. He says: “I could cheat and take a lot of shortcuts by betraying what is shown on the screen, but the fans of that show certainly will not accept or forgive it… and I will not do that either.”
Alistair Lizaralde creates each detailed floor plan on paper using colored pencils and markers. “In my work as an interior designer, I’ve used design software for both plans and rendering, but for this project, I prefer to keep it old school.” On top of the actual time spent drawing, there are hours and hours of research, from rewatching the series, to taking notes and determining measurements for each item. “It’s something very similar to making a puzzle, where there are usually empty areas that have to be located and linked together, and fitted into other spaces.”
Ultimately, his work paid off, as the book is a testament to the wonderful locations that have shaped our favorite stories over the years.
