A modern Mount Albert home inspired by Sir Miles Warren has been in the same family for 50 years

Designed and built by a commercial architect in the 1970s and enjoyed by his family today, this sprawling period home at 7 Summit Drive is set in a prime location on Auckland’s Mt Albert.

A family home that has been the scene of many celebrations over the years, including two weddings, the 340sqm main residence and the 50sqm one-bedroom cottage are set around a stunning central pool and surrounded by landscaped gardens.

The seller was “a fairly young architect” when he designed the house about 50 years ago, and says co-workers were “full of suggestions” and all contributed ideas to the plans.

What emerged was a collaboration of New Zealand modernism inspired by Sir Miles Warren that would be the backdrop for generations of family life.

“We loved the look of the painted brick used by Christchurch architect Miles Warren, and this made an impact,” says the owner.

“My fondest memories will be all the get-togethers over the years between the children and their friends. This was the best thing about the house. It was a wonderful place to bring people together.”

Set on 1,234 square metres, it offers plenty of space for a group to gather.

If the five bedrooms and three bathrooms in the main residence weren’t enough, there’s also a luxury granny flat, which was initially custom-built so grandpa could live with them on site. The country house has its own garden area.

Now looking for a new family to take over and enjoy this home in the future, the sellers are reluctantly downsizing. Interest in the property has reportedly been strong.

“It’s the kind of house people will move into. Especially since it’s on the hill. People just love it,” says listing agent Rachel Berry of Ray White.

“It’s definitely an iconic area. Summit Drive is one of the finest streets in Mt Albert. It’s very well received.”

Special features include the “comfort room” with copper-faced fireplace, “house lines”, yellow joinery and sunny northwest aspect.

The house will go up for auction on September 27, 2023.
