A ‘luxury’ independent hotel opens in York after a £2 million refurbishment

A new luxury boutique hotel, New Holgate, has opened its doors in York, following a £2 million refurbishment.

Originally a pair of Grade II listed Victorian houses built in 1846, New Holgate has been completely renovated and redesigned, with a vision to create a ‘home away from home’ for couples, families and solo travellers.

Acquired late last year by local businessman, Nick Bradley, who built his career specializing in property and hospitality, the former B&B has since been converted into a ‘luxury’ boutique hotel.

The townhouse consists of four floors and features 12 individually designed bedrooms, which include three room types, king, double and luxury family suites. With all ground floor rooms being dog friendly, the hotel has been designed with the whole family in mind.

The interior of the hotel was designed by award-winning Yorkshire interior design firm Studio Two Interiors. With references to York’s industrial heritage and nearby Holgate Bridge, built in 1911, iron-inspired installations and artwork in vibrant colors are woven throughout the hotel to create spaces that are “spacious, light and welcoming”.

The bedroom suites include furnishings inspired by New York and Amsterdam styles as well as added touches such as Hypnos mattresses, large flat-screen Smart TVs and bathrooms featuring rain showers and locally sourced toiletries from Harrogate-based H2K for a “spa-like experience”.

With sustainability a key aspect of the hotel’s vision, many of the building’s original features have been carefully restored and measures have been taken to help reduce its carbon footprint including installing electric car chargers on site for guests to use during their stay.

Partnerships are being developed with regional suppliers to offer a carefully crafted menu of regionally sourced food and beverages which guests can enjoy in the light and airy breakfast room and unique whiskey lounge and bar.
