Bat found inside Houston apartment
A Houston woman says she woke up to a bat flying around her apartment. The woman said she asked for help for several days and ended up taking matters into her own hands. FOX 26’s Natalie He has more about what the woman and apartment management have to say.
Houston – A woman says she woke up to a live bat flying around her apartment in southwest Houston.
Shortly after 5:30 a.m., Dashonda Bunyabi woke up after hearing a strange sound in her room. When the flying creature hung upside down from the ceiling, she realized it was a bat and started screaming.
“I don’t know how I got in. I couldn’t find an entry point,” Bonabi said.
Bunyabi said the bat then flew into her daughter’s room, where her 3-year-old granddaughter was also sleeping. After nearly seven hours of asking for help, they decided to leave and stay in a hotel.

“Before we left, the maintenance guy came over and asked me to hit it with a Swiffer,” Bonabi said.
On Monday, another day passed without help. The next morning, Bunyabi took matters into her own hands with the help of her best friend.
“We just started shaking the doors a little bit and the bird started flying. As soon as it started flying, it was able to swing at it. It hit it hard and it kind of bounced off the wall and into my daughter’s laundry basket. So we folded the clothes that I touched and carried them with this “The way to the trash.”
Boniaby says she now hopes to move units at the Stone Forest Apartments in Fondren, because she’s concerned there may be more bats lurking in the walls. She claims to have heard more bats flying around, and says she spotted several bats flying outside her apartment from outside.

“I stood out here and watched about three or four fly out of here,” Bonabi said.
David Long is the owner of Houston Bat Removal. Contrary to popular belief, he says, it is relatively uncommon for bats to contract rabies or be dangerous because they feed on insects and will not attack humans unless provoked.
Long adds that bat colonies can only become dangerous if left to grow for several years inside a building structure.

“When you have a buildup of guano in a wall, you can move air from the wall into the living space, and that can make people sick with histoplasmosis, which is an upper respiratory infection caused by fungi,” Long said.
According to the CDC, symptoms of histoplasmosis infection include fever, cough, fatigue, chills, headache, chest pain, and body aches. According to Long, the infection can be treated with an antifungal medication.
Loretta Wiley, a supervisor at Stone Forest Apartments, told FOX 26 the apartments do not have a bat problem. According to Wiley, maintenance responded immediately once they learned of the problem on Monday. Wiley says the crew will install a screen to prevent more bats from flying into the unit. She adds that the apartments will work with Bunyabi to address the problem.
