A father prevents his “dirty” stepdaughter from using menstrual products in the family bathroom
“I don’t see how I can be so irrational when it makes my kids uncomfortable.”
A man has come under fire for banning his stepdaughter from using menstrual products in the bathroom she shares with his teenage sons. His new wife moved into his house with her 19-year-old daughter six months ago, and they were settling in well until one of his three sons complained about his stepsister’s use of sanitary products.
“I have three sons who are 18, 16, and 15. She (my stepdaughter) is a really good kid and a good influence on my kids, and I really enjoy having her around. My wife and her daughter have moved on,” he said on Reddit. “They came into my house and sold their house. My stepdaughter’s father is not in her life, nor is my children’s mother. All four children share a bathroom.”
He went on to explain how his sons had never shared their home with a woman before, and only had short periods of visiting with their mother when they were younger. He added: “My eldest son, 18, came to me last week and told me that his half-sister disposes of her used sanitary products in the bin they share, but she does not use toilet paper or sandwich bags to hide who she is.

“It makes him uncomfortable which I think is reasonable. My sons are teenagers and they don’t want to see their stepsister’s menstrual products on full display. A few nights ago I went into the kitchen to get a snack and she was in there doing some stuff. I work at university and my wife mentioned that she knows that Her period had come, so I took the opportunity to talk to her.
“I told her my kids were feeling uncomfortable and asked her if she would mind putting her used products in diaper bags or flushing them down the toilet.” Assuming he was joking, she laughed at his request before returning to what she was doing. But after he “got deeper”, she responded to him.
He added: “She laughed and told me it came from a man who was falling like a gorilla and had three sons who were falling, which I thought was just an unnecessary attack.” “I was nothing but nice to the girl, there is no comparison. My sons should not be exposed to her unhealthy products if it makes them uncomfortable.
“She kept lecturing me about how tampons can’t be cleaned and that it’s bad for the environment if you use diaper bags for each one, which I think is just an excuse. I called her by the scruff and told her that this was my house and that’s what I’m saying.” He asked his wife to speak to her daughter, but she refused and said it was “ridiculous” to make such a request.

When I told her it was making my sons uncomfortable, she said my sons needed to catch it and they rolled over and went to sleep. “This is a real issue for me and she didn’t care enough to have a discussion about it. I asked my stepdaughter again in the morning, and she did the same thing as her mother, and she completely dismissed it. They both did,” he said. “You told me to stop being so silly, but I don’t see how I can be so unreasonable when it makes my kids uncomfortable.”
Commenting on his post, one user said: “Sorry but what? I’m a man and I realize this is ridiculous. You need to help yourself and your son become better men and accept that this is a natural process. Are you uncomfortable with your wife’s actions?” Use the same ? I suppose you are not teaching your children to be better.”
Another user added: “She threw them in the trash where they belong. What would happen if your sons married a woman? Would they ask their wives to hide something they can’t control?” A third user said: “First, you can’t flush a tampon. It will clog the toilet and welcome plumbing bills. Second, as long as she has it wrapped in toilet paper, the skater kids can suck it up.”
