Winning the lottery is a dream come true for many people. Even though the odds are against most people, they still buy tickets in hopes of gaining some financial stability. While one might think that people who win the lottery would go out and do something extravagant with the money, you would be surprised to know that this is not the case with a lot of people. Today’s harsh economy has taken many basic necessities, like housing, from many people. One Reddit user, u/mikes47deep, asked the online community what they would do if they won the lottery, and these 10 answers speak volumes about what the economy does to people:

1. Buy a cabin in the woods

A simple hut in the forest. I’m tired of my life now. I just want to hang out with my dog while I pick chanterelles. u/AcidNeonDreams.

Me too. My friend and I talked about moving to our campsite if one of us won the lottery. It’s quite a distance: there are no neighbors, the fishing is good, and the city is only about a half-hour drive away. u/shun615

2. Pay off debt and buy a house

Debt repayment. Tooth replacement. Finally, see a doctor. Buying a car and a house I could still afford if I didn’t have any money at all. u/StatusJazz.

Many people in America would see a doctor if they didn’t need to worry about bills, even with some type of health insurance, there are bills for things that are not covered including co-pays. Fuck the country I live in. We destroy or implicate other third world countries and they end up with a better health care system than we have. u/yunitoyuniro

3. Get a personal chef and fitness trainer

My wife and I talk about this a lot. We didn’t even want to move, we were quitting our jobs, paying off our debt, and paying for a personal chef. Doing whatever we want all day and coming home to delicious meals cooked with a variety of healthy ingredients anytime we want would be an absolute life changer. u/who519.

And a fitness trainer. “I want Jennifer Garner’s arms.” Then they would go to Brentwood and take her by the arm and give it to me. u/e11spark

4. Buy a car and a bike

I won the lottery, sort of. It was only 5 numbers, but I was 20 at the time, so I felt like I hit the Powerball jackpot. He bought two motorcycles and a Civic Si. Of course, I didn’t actually win the Powerball LOL. But when you’re 20 and you have a motorcycle and a car, you’re basically Bill Gates. Then I “retired” for a year and traveled a bit. Nothing too crazy. u/franklights

5. Mortgage survey

A group of people I love are paying off their mortgages. u/strong solution-7492.

It is true that. Pay off all your money first. Then take care of your immediate friends and family (as long as that is possible) and then determine how much you need to live on and leave it to your children. Donate the rest. I am 39 years old. I have lived a modest life so far and have no desire for an ostentatious existence. I just want to live a normal life without having to worry about money at all. sh/sho-dez

6. Buy a small house

Man, I just want a small house and isolate myself to draw, but I can paint without worrying about anything. That would be bliss. Sh/45s_

In my hometown, Chile. I love my country even with all the bad things (like any other country really). I think there is something near town in case I don’t want the constant noise but sometimes going to visit family/friends would be nice, giving them gifts with a ridiculous amount of money I would have gotten and I imagine with all that money it would be really fun to get out. But I don’t want to spend that much money right away, I’ll just keep it or try to learn investing or something so I don’t work a single day in my life and only make time for my passion. Sh/45s_

7. Buy and rent homes at low prices

I will do this slowly, over time, and only when my neighbors decide they are going to sell their houses, buy every house in my neighborhood, and then start renting them out at a much lower price than the going rate. Like single-handedly destroying rental prices in my city. Start with family and friends, telling them they’ll get a family discount so they don’t ask questions. I tell them I’ve been a landlord for a long time and have several properties, but I don’t have a lot of liquid assets (so they don’t think about getting money from me). Find jobs for renters, and help them build productive, happy lives, complete with as much education as they want to pursue. I die without a cent when I am old, and leave to each of them the house which they have been renting from me all those years. u/LeStiqsue

8. Get a Titanic scale model kit

1:200 scale Titanic collection. It’s expensive and I doubt I have the space for it. I honestly haven’t put any models together since I was eight years old. But it looks very cool. and I want that. sigh. I realize this is nowhere near as fantasy as everyone says but I don’t need much. Maybe I’ll take a trip to Wales to find out where my ancestors came from. This is amazing. u/Fred_the_skeleton

9. Helping people

Helping people I consider worthy of help. Good people but they have faced difficulties and need help to reach a better life. I won’t make them rich, but I will at least get them to a fair starting point again. My goal in life is to have a net positive impact on everyone I meet. Winning the lottery will help me help many more people than I currently help. u/DailyDad

10. Buy real estate in the city center

I’m going to buy some real estate downtown in the small town where I live. I’ll make some tiny houses big enough for a shower, refrigerator, TV, and bed. I’ll let the homeless stay there at night. Assign a team that will wash the buildings every day after they leave and prepare them for the next day. Feed them. Have people come out every six months for medical and dental checkups and things like that. Help those who can work find work. Helping those who cannot afford physical and mental health treatment. I’ve been so lucky in life that if I had money, this is how I would spend it. I rarely play the lottery but when I do..that’s my intention. u/fantasticmrjeff
